Heavy rain continued to affect several parts of Kerala on Friday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting more rainfall on Saturday. The weather department has issued orange alerts for Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod, while yellow alerts remain in the remaining seven districts. Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant.

Schools closed in six districts

Educational institutions will remain closed on Saturday in Kozhikode, Kannur, Kasaragod, Thrissur, Kottayam and Pathanamthitta districts due to the heavy rain forecast. The holidays apply to schools, anganwadis and several other educational institutions, with scheduled examinations continuing as planned in most districts.

Transport disrupted, fishing ban continues

The IMD advised fishermen not to venture into the seas along the Kerala, Karnataka and Lakshadweep coasts on Friday and Saturday due to rough weather. Meanwhile, KSRTC resumed bus services on the Ambalapuzha–Thiruvalla route after floodwaters receded, although another landslide in Kannur forced the closure of the Udayagiri–Thabor road.

Flood impact persists

Waterlogging continued in low-lying areas of Kuttanad and Thiruvalla, with concerns over a possible bund breach in parts of Kuttanad. Search operations also continued for missing fishermen off the Kerala coast, while families of those still missing staged protests, demanding intensified rescue efforts.

State seeks crop loss assistance

The Kerala government estimated crop losses from the ongoing rain and floods at ₹99.29 crore and sought ₹110 crore in financial assistance from the Union government for relief and restoration. According to the state agriculture department, 36,829 farmers have been affected by the ongoing weather-related damage.
